A truck transporting air is just as expensive as one that is fully loaded. When shipping bulky industrial components, transport containers are often not filled to capacity. Several ORBIS customers were facing exactly this challenge. Our product development team addressed it with an idea that has now reached full production readiness: a lower-profile version of the proven GitterPak® for heavy industrial components.

One supplier ships flat yet heavy housing components for vehicle production. In some cases, the existing GitterPak®, with a height of 800 mm, provides significantly more space than required. As a result, unused space remains at the top of each container. The consequence is that transport units are only partially filled while taking up the same amount of space on trucks and in warehouses. This leads to additional trips that could otherwise be avoided.

Several ORBIS customers from different industries needed a solution to this problem and requested a container with a lower height. “Customer feedback is extremely important to us because it enables us to offer products that meet real market requirements,” says Jürgen Krahé, Senior Director EMEA at ORBIS Europe. “That is why our product developers got to work immediately and developed a new transport solution.”

Just a few months later, ORBIS launched the new GitterPak® variant with dimensions of 1200 × 800 × 600 mm (HDB1208-600). While the footprint remains the European standard size, the container is lower than its sister model at just 600 mm in height.

Krahé adds: “This makes it the only foldable solution on the market with these external dimensions. In addition, the lower height improves ergonomics and accessibility, making loading and unloading easier.”

Fewer Trips, More Cargo

Despite its reduced height, the HDB1208-600 maintains the same load capacity of up to 900 kg, with an internal volume of 335 liters. “Because the containers can now be fully utilized, users can transport more parts per shipment. This generates significant cost savings, as fewer trucks or ocean containers are required,” says Krahé.

When fully loaded, the new GitterPak® variant can be stacked 1+5 statically and 1+3 dynamically. When folded, it reduces storage space requirements by approximately 53% compared to its assembled state, making return transport more cost-effective as well.

The container is manufactured entirely from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and features structural foam-molded sidewalls and a full-plastic picture-frame base. Unlike steel containers, there is no risk of rust, and maintenance requirements are minimal. Custom protective inserts are also available for application-specific requirements.

A Durable and Sustainable Reusable Packaging Solution

Like all ORBIS reusable packaging solutions, the new GitterPak® is exceptionally durable, made from 80% recycled material, and fully recyclable at the end of its service life. As a result, it already meets the requirements of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). In the right application, it provides both an economical and environmentally responsible alternative to steel or wooden containers.

At the end of their service life, ORBIS Europe buys back used transport packaging at material value, allowing it to be recycled into new products.

Local to Local: ORBIS Europe enters new markets with regional experts

ORBIS Europe continues to grow: Since September 2025, the manufacturer of sustainable plastic packaging has been active in the Italian market, with Nicola Corciulo as its local representative. In April 2026, the company expanded its European presence to Romania, Slovakia and Hungary, appointing Tamas Kodori at the helm. In doing so, ORBIS is pursuing a “Local to Local” approach.

Logistics in the food industry: Meeting high standards with plastic packaging

Transporting food safely, hygienically, and cost-efficiently is a constant challenge for manufacturers and logistics service providers in the food industry. At the same time, sustainability expectations continue to grow—driven by regulations such as the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR). As a result, traditional solutions like wooden boxes are increasingly reaching their limits. In the right applications, reusable plastic packaging offers a forward-looking alternative—one that not only meets strict regulatory and ecological requirements but also delivers clear economic added value.

Heavy industry: Plastics open up new possibilities

Transport packaging: It influences how safely components arrive, how efficiently storage space is used, and how high a company’s carbon footprint is. Many industrial companies still rely on traditional steel containers today because of their high load-bearing capacity. However, they are also heavy, rigid, prone to rust, and expensive to transport when empty. Reusable plastic packaging offers an economical and ecological alternative in the right application.
